The worst, I think, is 1 Rockman and 1 Mantis, because that combo doesn't really make use of the benefits that either mantis or rockmen get there's no synergy there. So for me, Rockmen and Mantis are both the best boarders, with different endgames. You still need to be careful of ships with medbays(although a fire in a medbay will burn it down while you're fighting in there) but it's super safe and absolutely hilarious. A good shot with a fire beam or a fire bomb followed by porting your Rockmen into the fire is an absolute killing machine. Through the midgame they can fill the same strategy as mantis, but they have a really special bonus in their immunity to fire. So it's less critical to have sensor 2 since there's way less stuff that's really risky. On the other hand, Rockmen are less likely to kill things, but can survive suffocation on teleporter 1 and can survive most enemies(maybe not mantis, I'm not sure on the numbers here) on teleporter 1. Put 4 mantis in it and watch them slice up some rebels. The real spice comes in one of the Mantis ships(I think layout B), which has a 4 person teleporter. If you get a weapon you want from the surrender (or one that sells for a lot) take it, and if you would rather re-roll, then. At the second stage, you get the reward whether you kill it or not and whether it's by boarding or by destroying the ship, but you also get a surrender option first. This ship is widely viewed as one of the best in the game, always near the top of the tier lists whenever someone draws them up online, and its easy to see why. Kill it at the first stage, and you get normal rewards. Alright, time for another FTL mission, this time with the Mantis B Cruiser. This leads to a strategy of "do 1/2 damage to weapons, 1/2 damage to medbay then teleport the murder squad to the medbay so they can't repair it". Livestream Link (for those who would rather watch first before reading). However once the mantis level up they become a force to be reckoned with, capable of taking out whole crews by themselves. For this I'd want sensors 2 or teleporter 2 to make sure I'm not sending them against other mantis in a blast door ship. Mantis are do more damage but have no survivability bonus, so I want to know I'm safe sending them.
